limewash

All about limewash paint.

If you’re dying to get away from the all-white trend, then Belgian-based limewash should make the short list. Like a fine wine, it only gets better with age. It’s environmentally friendly, mineral-based, and completely all natural.

Appearance

Appearance

Limewash, also known as lime paint, gives surfaces a soft, chalky texture like suede. When brushed on, it dries to create a patinated, aged look with natural color changes over time. This paint adds depth and brightness to walls.

Limewash naturally varies in color, showing both light and dark areas. Light colors have less noticeable changes, while dark colors show more differences.

Limewash is known for its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the air as it cures. This process, called carbonation, can help reduce indoor air pollution and odors by absorbing certain gases. Lime’s high pH level means microorganisms can’t survive, which adds a hypoallergenic quality.

Durability

Cleaning limewashed walls isn't typically necessary since its mottled appearance shows less dirt than traditional paint. However, if touch-ups are needed, applying a diluted re-coat of limewash works best.

Pros

• Breathable (no condensation in damp conditions).

• Natural, solvent-free, and hypoallergenic.

• Absorbs odors and is bacteria-resistant.

• More affordable than other plaster techniques.

Cons

• Color variance is hard to control and not to everyone’s liking.

• May require several coats to get the desired effect.

• More porous than roman clay, so it’s not easily cleaned. May require a re-coat.
